Brad Mitzelfelt is the First District Supervisor for San Bernardino County, California. His 17,000 square-mile district is the largest in the contiguous United States, encompassing the Mojave Desert cities of Adelanto, Apple Valley, Barstow, Hesperia, Needles, Twentynine Palms and Victorville, as well as numerous unincorporated communities.
His priorities and accomplishments include improving public safety by helping expand the capacity of the county’s jail system while increasing fire protection, child-predator controls and gang suppression and intervention. His other priorities include improving transportation infrastructure, promoting job growth, and preserving private property rights and access to public lands.
Supervisor Mitzelfelt is currently helping Victor Valley College establish an aviation technical training school at the
Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville. He is also assisting the College in doubling its Registered Nurse training while helping establish nurse training at Barstow College. He is contributing millions of dollars toward youth and after-school programs to provide kids with constructive, fun and educational activities in a safe environment.
In an effort to manage and plan for growth, Mr. Mitzelfelt helped develop the county's regional transportation facilities mitigation program, which ensures that new development pays its fair share for regional highway and road improvements. He also recently helped initiate a new program to mitigate growth impacts by ensuring that new development pays its fair share for unincorporated infrastructure, including drainage facilities, Sheriff’s substations, fire stations, libraries and museums.
Supervisor Mitzelfelt was appointed on January 10, 2007, to serve the remaining two years of former Supervisor Bill Postmus' term, which was vacated when Mr. Postmus became County Assessor. He was previously Chief of Staff to Mr. Postmus for six years. During that time, Mr. Mitzelfelt helped write local laws strengthening ethics rules, increasing the amount of county information available through the Internet, and improving public health through a
restaurant-grading system. He also helped write new policies to return a higher share of property tax revenues to cities that previously received the lowest allocations, and he was a key architect of the reorganization of the County's Economic Development Agency.
Supervisor Mitzelfelt is Chairman of the High Desert Corridor Authority, a joint-powers agency with the County of Los Angeles that is currently planning a future highway between the Antelope and Victor Valleys. He is also Chairman of the Victor Valley Economic Development Authority, a joint powers agency that oversees redevelopment around the former George Air Force Base, and he is Vice-Chairman of the
QuadState County Government Coalition.
Supervisor Mitzelfelt serves on numerous additional governing boards and commissions, including San Bernardino Associated Governments (
SANBAG - the county's transportation commission), the Local Agency Formation Commission
(LAFCO), the
Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District, the
Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority, the Morongo Basin Transit Authority, and the
Public Lands Committee of the National Association of Counties. He is a director and past chairman of the
Victor Valley Transit Authority. He was recently appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the
California Seismic Safety Commission, and he previously served on the Board of Directors for the
San Bernardino County Fair, having been appointed by former Governor Pete Wilson.
Supervisor Mitzelfelt is a veteran of 10 years of active and reserve military service. He served as a U.S. Marine in Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, respectively. He is a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Management from the University of Redlands, and a Certificate in Economic Development Management from the University of California Riverside Extension. Mr. Mitzelfelt lives in Wrightwood with his wife, Megan.
